What Is Adipotide?
Adipotide, also known as FTPP (Fat-Targeted Proapoptotic Peptide), is a synthetic peptidomimetic developed by researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Unlike appetite-suppressing peptides such as GLP-1 agonists, Adipotide works through a completely different mechanism: it targets and destroys the blood vessels that supply white adipose (fat) tissue, cutting off circulation and causing fat cells to die through a process called ischemic apoptosis.
The molecule is built from two joined segments: a “homing” sequence that binds selectively to blood vessels feeding fat tissue, and a second segment that triggers cell death once it arrives. This dual design is what gave Adipotide its striking results in early animal research.
What the Animal Studies Showed
In a landmark study published in 2011, obese rhesus monkeys treated with Adipotide lost roughly 11% of their body weight over 28 days, along with measurable reductions in waist circumference and improvements in insulin sensitivity. These results generated significant excitement, since obesity-related disease remains one of the most difficult problems in medicine.
But the same studies also identified a consistent problem: dose-dependent kidney toxicity. Researchers observed elevated creatinine levels, tubular cell damage, and signs of dehydration in treated animals — effects that scaled with dose.
Why It Never Reached the Market
Following the animal research, a Phase 1 clinical trial was launched to test Adipotide in humans, specifically in prostate cancer patients with obesity. That trial was discontinued, and the company’s focus shifted away from the compound entirely. While full results were never published, the leading explanation is that the same kidney toxicity seen in animals proved unacceptably dangerous in humans, with too narrow a gap between an effective dose and a harmful one.
To date, no regulatory authority — not the FDA, not the EMA, nor any other body — has approved Adipotide for human use in any form. There is no established safe human dose, no verified long-term safety data, and no legal pathway to obtain a pharmaceutical-grade version for personal use.
Why “Research Use Only” Vials Are Especially Risky
Peptides sold online labeled “for research purposes only” exist entirely outside regulatory oversight. Independent testing of these products has repeatedly found:

Combine that uncertainty with a compound already known to cause dose-dependent kidney damage in controlled laboratory conditions, and the risk profile for anyone using an unverified vial outside a lab setting is significant — with no medical supervision to catch early signs of renal injury.
The Bottom Line
Adipotide/FTPP is a genuinely interesting piece of obesity research — a reminder of how creative the search for new treatments can be. But it is not a finished therapy, and it was shelved specifically because of safety concerns that were never resolved. Products sold as “Adipotide” for personal use carry compounded risk: an already-narrow safety margin, combined with zero quality assurance on what’s actually in the vial.
